Genus Achelia

Hodge, 1864

Body short and stout, with closely crowded lateral processes. Cephalon massive, with an indistinct neck and a square frontal part. Abdomen not separated from the last body segment, narrow cylindrical, horizontal.
Ocular tubercle near the front of the cephalon, strongly protuberant, with distinct eyes. Proboscis directed obliquely downwards, constricted at the base, fusiform. Chelifores, in fully developed specimens, very small, with two segments, last segment globular; without a chela. Palps of medium length, with 8-9 segments.
Ovigerous legs present in both sexes, with 7-10 segments, relatively short, without a distinct terminal claw and with a very small number of serrated marginal spines.
Ambulatory legs short and robust, frequently spinous; femur very broad, with the outer corner more or less projecting; tarsus particularly small; propodus strongly developed, more or less curved and spinous on the inner margin; terminal claw strong, auxiliary claws well developed.
The sexual apertures in the male are situated at the point of a prominent projection on coxa 2 of the two posterior pairs of legs.
