Body robust in form, partly spinous or smooth, with the lateral processes more or less crowded together. Cephalon of medium size, very much expanded at the extremity, with a comparatively short and thick neck. The two last segments of the trunk distinctly defined from each other. Abdomen produced, conic, partly spinous.
Ocular tubercle obtusely rounded, with well-developed eyes. Proboscis directed obliquely downwards, conic, point mamilliform exerted, oral orifice surrounded by a dense wreath of delicate bristles. Chelifores well developed; scape spinous; chela (in full-grown specimens) robust, directed obliquely downwards, expanded towards the extremity; fingers directed inwards, short and thick, with nodular projections on the inner edge and point obtuse. Palps absent.
Ovigerous legs present in both sexes; with ten segments, terminating with a well-developed claw, 5th segment in male with a short lobe at the extremity.
Ambulatory legs more or less thickset and spinous or elongated and beset with short hairs; femur exceedingly swollen in the female; tarsus very small; propodus more or less curved, with strong spines on the inner edge; terminal claw powerfully developed, but without any auxiliary claws.
The outer egg-masses, consisting of numerous comparatively small ova, enveloped in a common membrane.
